Is your budget
ready for higher postage rates?
On February
12th, the United States Postal
Service announced the new rates
for most services, effective May
12, 2008. In keeping with the
new rules of the Postal
Accountability and Enhancement
Act, the USPS is giving mailers
the full 90 days notice on all
services except Priority Mail,
Express Mail and Parcel Select.
Those rates will be announced in
May.
The cost of a
First-Class stamp will increase
to 42 cents, as will the cost of
the Forever stamp. Since its
introduction last April, the
Postal Service has sold
approximately 5 billion Forever
stamps. They plan to have 5
billion of the Forever stamps
available to meet consumer
demand prior to the rate
increase. On May 12th, the
Forever stamp will also cost 42
cents.
All other
classes of mail will also see
increases, but depending on the
amount of labor used to process
mail, the increases by category
can vary in excess of the
Consumer Price Index. Standard
Mail letters will increase by
approx. 3.4%, and flats by
0.86%. But parcels and not-flat
machinables will increase 9.67%
as this mail is more labor
intensive.
Please follow
the attached link and print a
copy of the new rates. Because
there are no preparation changes
in this rate adjustment, you can
analyze current mailings to see
what impact the new rates will
have on your mailing budget. If
you have questions, we’re
available to help.
