Our new Six
Sigma Black Belt, Cindy Duong,
has tackled her first project in
streamlining our warehousing
department. This process
reengineering is being driven
with the DMAIC (Define, Measure,
Analyze, Improve, and Control)
methodology.
For SMS this means our team has
created thought and process maps
with detailed information of
each transaction step within the
warehouse. Measurements of each
transaction have been taken to
understand the baselines of the
“As-Is” process to demonstrate
the areas of process
improvement. We are now
implementing these new
procedures through our MAILSHOP
software running on hand-held
scanners. This will reduce cycle
times and prevent errors.
The benefits to our customers
are two fold:
By
enhancing inventory accuracy,
SMS can better control
production schedules and on time
postal drop dates.
We
can also provide our customers
accurate inventory on line
through our secure customer web
portal, that way we (SMS and the
customer) can together control
the supply chain of printed
material.
We have found no better way to
positively impact the
environment then not over
producing unnecessary material.
By reducing this waste we help
both the customer and the
environment by saving paper,
energy and money.
Kudos’ to Ms. Duong and the Six
Sigma program for this
initiative, this will definitely
improve SMS’ quality and
efficiency in the marketplace
going forward. |
