Is your
mail ready to become
Intelligent?
In January,
2009 the Intelligent Mail®
Barcode (IMB) will be required
to claim automation discounts
for all letter and flat size
mail. Unlike a Postnet® barcode,
an IMB does more than tell the
mail where to go. Intelligent
Mail® barcodes ‘talk’ to the
Postal Service, and to the mail
owner.
IMB’s tell the Postal Service
what class of mail it is, where
it came from, where it’s going
and much more. The IMB has the
potential to tell a mailer when
each piece in a mailing is
delivered. For Confirm® users,
use of the IMB eliminates the
need for the Postnet and Planet
barcodes, and for Address Change
Service subscribers, the IMB
eliminates the need to print
subscriber codes.
The Postal Service will use the
data gleaned from the IMB to
tell them where there are
quality or service issues in
processing the mail. With that
information, they can better
plan operations to eliminate
delays.
All of this intelligence comes
with a learning curve, so now is
the time to study your mail, and
get a mailer ID from the Postal
Service. The Mailer ID is one of
the requirements to generating
an Intelligent Mail® Barcode.
